Shilpa opts out of Brit flick

Bollywood star and Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty has reportedly opted out of a British film. According to recent reports Shilpa lost her British comedy flick ‘Quick, Slip Me A Bride’ when she quoted a price too high for the makers. A website quoted the producer Renu Patel saying, “Shilpa agreed to film with us. Now we have been forced to go ahead without her because she wanted 350,000 pounds and insisted half of this had to be paid before she even shot any scene.”

Reportedly, Shilpa had also asked them to postpone the shoot till next year, which the producer was not willing to do. Shilpa’s spokesperson Dale Bhagwagar admitted that she did quote her price. “ Shilpa asks for what she deserves and she even gets what she deserves. Having said that, money is not always the criteria why an assignment doesn’t work out. There could be a difference of opinion about the role or a problem with dates.”
Meanwhile, Shilpa is filming a yoga DVD and plans to market it overseas later this year.
She underwent intensive training this month in preparation to ensure she perfected the “asanas” or postures for the DVD, which will initially be sold in Britain and Dubai. “Shilpa will give details about how to stay trim and fit with a normal diet,” said Bhagwagar. “She will talk about what foods to avoid and how she maintains her figure since she is known to have the best figure in Bollywood.

Special puja for Sanjay Dutt

Director Sanjay Gupta’s Versova house was visible from afar, bathed and bedecked in lights. It made for a fitting venue for a special puja that he had organised for Sanjay Dutt. It was also Sanju’s first appearance after he was released from jail on an interim bail.

Bollywood actors, and producers had turned up in full force to be with their beloved Sanju Baba as he made his first appearance since the time he came home last Wednesday. People turned up in hordes for the mata ki chowky to pray for Sanju.

Sanju walked in at 7 pm sharp. Dressed in a simple white T-shirt and blue denims, he was a picture of calm. Friends Bunty Walia, Ajay Arora and Paresh Gehlani walked in with him. Manyata, reportedly, was cooking dinner at home for sister Priya’s birthday.

The aarti started at quarter past seven, with Dutt performing the Jyot Jalana ceremony and tying the holy band (chunni) around Mata’s idol. It was an auspicious day indeed, with Raksha Bandhan and sister Priya Dutt’s birthday falling on the same day.

Gupta insisted that Sanju was the eldest in the family; and ensured that he performed all the rituals. Brothers Rohit and Ronit Roy came together with their wives Manasi and Neelam respectively.

Dia Mirza was seen in her usual chirpy mood. Kirron Kher walked in late, probably straight from a shoot and Vivek Oberoi arrived straight from Chennai, at 11 pm. Anu Malek was seen chatting with Manoj Bajpai who was accompanied by wife Neha.

VJ Sophie was also seen at the puja, along with Koena Mitra, Bappi Lahiri, Sanjay Suri, Suparna Varma, Rakesh Upadhyay, Masumi, Parvin Dabas and Hansal Mehta. After the puja, prasad and dinner were served to the guests.

Sush to play Rani Laxmibai on screen

Sushmita Sen intends to make history with her movie on Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi.

How’s this for ambition? Sushmita Sen is making her debut as a producer with a movie on Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and the studio she intends to construct in Madhya Pradesh for this project will be converted into a museum by the state government.

Bollywood, of course, has not heard of anything like this. But Sen is going great guns with her movie Jhansi Ki Rani . She, naturally, will portray the character of the legendary Indian queen and is keen on shooting for the movie from the end of this year.

The subject, considering its historical significance, requires major research. And the actress, in a bid to make the project, for the people, of the people and by the people, has roped in women and youth of the country to pitch in with the work.

“It isn’t just another ambitious project for me. It’s a legacy I will leave behind to the world. This is celebrating history, so whatever I do, will be a part of history. The script, contributed by many young people and women, is in place,” says Sushmita, adding, “I want to release the movie in early 2009. So all my work starts backwards from that date.”

The movie is being made with a huge budget in affiliation with the Madhya Pradesh government. And here’s where the museum comes in. The government has allotted a few acres of land in the birth place of the Rani for Sushmita to create a studio and shoot in.

After the movie is completed, the studio won’t be dismantled, but converted into a museum. And as part of the objects on display will be the costumes, props and other material used by Sushmita in her movie.

“It would be nice to retain all this for visual purpose as well,” says Sushmita. “We will start the museum and a trust in the name of Rani Laxmibai. The trust will look after the education and development of the girl child. The government has agreed as this will promote the country and it’s past glory.”

Sushmita wants to make the movie because she has a definite vision of how to portray the legendary Rani. She has yet to announce the name of her director.

“Since it’s a very important decision, I have taken all the precautions and considerations before zeroing in on the name. But once it’s known, people are going to agree and appreciate that I have made the correct decision,” she says.

Meanwhile, Sushmita will also be seen this year in Vivek Vaswani’s Dulha Mil Gaya and Karm. She has just signed films with David Dhawan and Dharmesh Darshan respectively.

“I wanted to do good films and limited them to two a year. I didn’t want to get busy playing Anjali, Aarti and all that,” she laughs, adding, “When my daughter came into my life, I realised I was getting inclined towards business as well, I got busy with that.

But I have expanded my horizon now. I am busy with my restaurant and lounge business. And I have a property which I want to develop into a spa.” Lady Luck, they say, favours the brave.

Schwarzenegger postpones trade mission to India

WASHINGTON: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has put off a trade mission to India scheduled for mid-November to early next year and cancelled a planned trip to the United Kingdom.

Schwarzenegger was to lead the trade mission to New Delhi and Mumbai Nov 11-16 to promote products and services from America's largest state, encourage foreign investment and expand cultural and educational ties.

The mission is expected to include business leaders from all industry sectors particularly agriculture, clean technology, biotech, tourism, aerospace, banking, high-tech and entertainment interested in building relationships in India.

In a statement issued in Sacramento, the governor said "California reaps tremendous benefits from these trade missions and we will work to reschedule that trip as soon as possible."

Schwarzenegger said he cancelled the trips to India and United Kingdom because he wanted "to maintain the flexibility to call a special session." His health care, political and water policy reforms have stalled in the state legislature, which is scheduled to wind up its business for the year on Sep 14 or perhaps earlier because of the Jewish holidays.

Schwarzenegger had planned the United Kingdom trip to address the annual conference of Britain's Conservative Party in September. Instead, he will participate via satellite. His trade mission to India is being rescheduled for a time after the new year, the mission office said.

The top four major items of export from California to India are: computers and electronic products, transportation equipment, manufactured goods and agricultural products. Computers and electronic products contributed to more than 30 percent of the total Californian exports to India. The export of these items grew from $1.3 billion in 2005 to $1.6 billion in 2006.

From a modest $5.6 billion in 1990, India-US bilateral trade in merchandise goods has increased to $31.9 billion in 2006, representing 470 percent growth in a span of 16 years. US exports of merchandise to India increased from $7.9 billion in 2005 to more than $10 billion in 2006, an increase of more than 25 per cent.

Salman Khan gets bail

An Indian court on Friday granted bail to top Bollywood actor Salman Khan pending his appeal against a conviction for poaching protected wildlife, paving the way for his release from prison.

The 41-year-old star was sent to jail last week after a court threw out an appeal by the actor against his conviction, under which he has to serve a five-year prison term. “The court has accepted his bail plea,” Khan's lawyer told reporters in western Jodhpur city.

The high court will now take up Khan's case on Oct 24.

The actor has also been convicted under India's Wildlife Protection Act in at least one other poaching case.

Khan allegedly shot dead a few endangered antelopes in the western state of Rajasthan during the making of a film in 1998.

Indian courts are often known to take several years, and sometimes decades, to pronounce verdicts because of a lack of resources and too much paperwork. Wildlife activists said they were disappointed about the bail.

“I find it shocking... How many times do we have to convict him?” former environment minister and animal activist Maneka Gandhi told the Times Now television network.

Khan, known for playing a tough guy in Hindi films, also faces charges of manslaughter after a road accident in 2002 left one person dead and four injured.—AFP
